In an industry dominated by state-owned enterprises, China’s Pacific Construction Group holds its own as the nation’s largest private builder. While the infrastructure giant signed deals with Mongolia, Chile, and Ghana in 2014, PCG’s founder Yan Jiehe told state-run newspaper China Daily in 2015 that he is determined to salvage China’s reputation in Europe–if only because state-owned companies have “thrown [it] away.” Last year, the company landed a $3.19 billion deal to build a highway between Montenegro and Albania–a first step in the company’s overseas pivot toward Europe.
