The maker of Mercedes Benz and Smart cars has joined Google, Audi, Tesla, and Ford in the race to develop autonomous vehicles. And in March 2016, on demand car service Uber placed a large order for 100,000 Mercedes S-Class vehicles. Germany’s second largest auto manufacturer is also investing heavily in lithium ion battery production facilities in an effort to expand its offerings of hybrid and electric cars.
