China Mobile is the world’s largest telecom, beating out Verizon and AT&T for the top spot. At just 19 years old the state-owned company dominates the Chinese market claiming more than two-thirds of the country’s market share. Jumping up 10 spots since last year in the Global 500, China Mobile currently manages the largest 4G network in the world with over 400 million subscribers, and it is currently working on upgrading to a 5G network. It is no longer so lucrative to simply be a wireless operator as online communication appears to be taking over, or at least infringing on, phone calls and mobile-based text messaging. To keep up with the technological advancements, China Mobile is working to transform itself into a digital service provider. The company plans to grow its internet-of-things revenue to $15 billion within the next few years.
