French retailer Carrefour has weathered the economic downturn in Brazil, its second largest market, better than rivals like Casino and Wal-Mart thanks to its discount Atacadao chain there. At the same time, its money-losing business in China has shrunk, bringing Carrefour down nine notches to #73 on the Global 500. On the whole, though things are looking up for Carrefour as sales in key markets like Spain, Italy and France pick up steam and the world’s 3rd largest retailer looks to open more stores globally.
