Russia’s largest non-state oil company faced U.S. and European sanctions, a weak ruble, and tumbling oil prices in 2014. Though Lukoil’s production increased with its work in Iraq’s West Qurna field, the company’s profits fell 39% on lower crude prices and write-downs on dryhole projects in Russia, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast. The oil giant has cut spending and is shelving gas exploration in Russia until the economics are more viable.
