Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision is the parent company of Foxconn Technology, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer. Foxconn’s workforce of more than a million assembles sought-after products like Apple iPhones and Sony PlayStations–but it has also been the target of extensive criticism over the grueling working conditions at its factories. In 2014, the company began to win some battles on the reputational front. Hon Hai announced it had hired 100,000 more people in mainland China to help meet production demands for Apple’s iPhone 6; that move, along with increased automation on Foxconn assembly lines, is widely seen as part of an effort by Hon Hai to distance itself from a reputation for pushing its employees past their limits. Financially, growing demand for iPhones bodes well for the company: Apple, which accounts for about 40% of Hon Hai’s revenue, announced in July that it would request a record-high production run of between 85 million and 90 million new phones between now and the end of the year.
