Russia’s state-owned energy giant climbed the Global 500 rankings last year only to drop 9 spots in 2015. Plunging global oil prices, foreign exchange headwinds, as well as Western economic sanctions cut into Gazprom’s European earnings. Gazprom’s 2014 profits plummeted 86% to about $3 billion. The company has been right in the middle of Russia’s conflict with the Ukraine, which buys billions of dollars worth of gas from Gazprom every year. While Gazprom deals with the fallout from Russia’s political strife, the company is looking to build new pipelines to extend its reach to new energy-hungry markets that want to tap into the reserves of the world’s largest natural gas producer.
