Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat faced a crisis in early 2015. The bank failed the Federal Reserve’s stress test in 2014. Concensus was that if Citi failed again, in early 2015, Corbat would be out of a job. However, the bank not only passed the stress test, it did so with one of the cleanest bills of health of all the major banks. Corbat has done an impressive job cutting costs and boosting profits at what was once the nation’s most troubled big bank. But Citi’s is still below its own profitability targets and Corbat needs to figure out a way to turn around its investment banking division, which is improving but still lags rivals.
