CRCC is the slightly smaller member of China’s state-controlled railway infrastructure duopoly (China Railway Engineering’s CRG is the other). China’s domestic railway-building boom is getting closer to a terminus as the country’s network gets closer to being fully built out. With that in mind, CRCC has been diversifying into non-railway projects and overseas projects, and in both arenas it’s further along than CRG. (The company was a partner in a high-speed rail line between Ankara and Istanbul in Turkey that opened in 2014–the first railway project to be completed by Chinese companies in a foreign country, according to Chinese media.) Morningstar reports that railway contracts now account for less than 40% of CRCC’s new infrastructure contracts. Urban light-rail, highways, and stadium facilities are some of the projects the company is taking on to pick up the slack. But like other Chinese engineering giants, it faces one major question: How long will China’s government continue to invest heavily in public works projects?
