Like U.K. rival Tesco, Carrefour has been fighting European consumers’ shift away from Big Box supermarkets as they turn to online shopping and smaller retailers closer to home. But so far, the French chain has had much more success with its strategy of investing in its stores, localizing its offerings, and aggressively lowering prices. For the second year in a row, all of its French formats (supermarkets, hypermarkets, and convenience stores) grew organically. Sales of non-food items were positive for the first time in six years in all of its operations.
