North America’s biggest jet maker (and second largest defense contractor) has had plenty of liftoff as far as its airplane sales are concerned, having delivered 723 planes in 2014 versus 648 the year prior. Its defense business is another story. Defense revenues are down 7% compared to the year prior as the Chicago-based company delivers fewer F-15 and C-17 aircraft. Delays on delivery of an aerial refueling tanker to the U.S. Air Force haven’t helped either. At the moment, a big government contract hangs in the balance, too. The Pentagon is in the market for a new fleet of multibillion-dollar long-range strike bombers, and Boeing and Lockheed are competing head to head with Northrop Grumman for the rights to the project. Boeing doesn’t need a repeat of 2001, when it lost the F-35 contract to Lockheed.
