    Banks: Commercial and Savings

Europe’s second-largest bank by assets is emerging from a long and painful downturn in the credit cycle in its home market, as demand for loans in the Eurozone starts to pick up. It has managed to absorb an $8.9 billion U.S. fine–at the time, the biggest ever against a bank–for violating sanctions without having to raise extra capital, but its license to clear dollar transactions has been temporarily suspended and it has been saddled with a five-year probation period by the Department of Justice. The incident led to long-time chairman Baudouin Prot being replaced by Jean Lemierre, formerly head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
