2017 marked Southwest’s 45th consecutive year of profitability as profits soared 55.4% to $3.5 billion on revenue of $21 billion. The airline celebrated the GOP tax cuts at the end of the year, handing out $1,000 bonuses to employees and predicting that the legislation will “significantly” boost earnings in 2018. Though 2018 is likely to be tainted by the accident on Southwest Flight 1380 in April that resulted in the first U.S. airline fatality since 2009.
