The retirement investment provider’s sales rose 1.2% to $34.2 billion in 2014, helping the firm move up three places in the Fortune 100 from last year’s list. CEO Roger W. Ferguson Jr. made progress in his efforts to expand the 96-year-old beyond its traditional customer base of academic and medical workers in October, when he closed a $6.25 billion deal to buy Nuveen investments from the private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners.
