Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman has won plaudits for shifting the bank away from Wall Street’s riskiest businesses. But it hasn’t paid off for the bank’s bottom line. Morgan Stanley’s return on equity, a key measure for financial firm’s profitability, fell in 2014 to just over 4%, about a quarter of many of its rivals. For now, shareholders, though, have rewarded the company for its flight to safety.
