Cigna, a provider health and life insurance plans in more than 30 countries, is off to a strong start in 2015. After the first quarter, the company raised its earnings outlook as it added more customers to its health insurance plans. Like other health insurers, Cigna is gaining more individual customers as a result of the Affordable Care Act. The Bloomfield, Conn.-based insurer has also benefited from higher premiums and fees, gaining 12.3% over the first three months this year. Cigna teamed up with Catamaran in 2013 to manage its drug benefits and has recently been reaping the benefits. The deal has already boosted earnings per share by 50 cents last year and another 10 cents to 15 cents gain is expected in 2015. Cigna also has a strong cash pile on-hand, which means it could pursue strategic acquisitions to bulk up its Medicare Advantage or Medicaid units.
