2013 was a strong year for MetLife, with net income soaring 170%. Since then, the largest life insurance agency in the U.S. has reported a first-quarter loss for 2014, including a 4% drop in operating income. The decline was caused in part by a $60 million payment to settle charges related to two of its subsidiaries selling insurance in New York state without the required license.
