Revenue and profit fell at Walgreen in 2012 as the drugstore chain struggled to win back customers it lost after a lengthy contract dispute with the prescription benefit provider Express Scripts. The two companies battled over payments for more than a year before reaching a settlement and renewing their relationship in July 2012. Walgreen executives acknowledged that 2012 was “a challenging year.” It instituted promotional discounts to win back customers and so far, 2013 is shaping up to be much brighter as Walgreen shares reach new 52-week highs.
