IBM stuck to its formula of strong earnings with flat revenues in 2012. Net income was up 5% while revenues decreased 2%, reflecting Big Blue’s increased focus on higher margin products like software and data analysis services for companies. Revenues were up in growth markets — especially in the BRIC countries — where sales increased 7%. IBM’s most visible group was its Smarter Planet initiative, which tailors solutions for governments that help manage traffic, reduce energy consumption or curb crime. The group’s revenue grew by 25% and its services formed the basis of a much-admired marketing campaign.
