The steelmaker has joined miner LKAB and power company Vattenfall in HYBRIT—an ambitious Swedish venture to make fossil-fuel-free steel. Rather than burning coal in the CO2-intensive iron production process, HYBRIT uses hydrogen and electricity from emissions-free sources. The product won’t be commercially available until 2026, but HYBRIT’s pilot plant started operations in August.
