Facebook rebrands as “Meta”


facebook is one of the most used product in the history of the world. It is an iconic social media brand, but increasingly it just doesn't encompass everything that we do instagram WhatsApp, Messenger quest now, Horizon Nazari and more building our social media app will always be an important focus for us. But right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can't possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future. Over time I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we're building towards. We just announced that we were making a fundamental change to our company, we're now looking at and reporting on our business as two different segments, one for our family of apps And one for work on future platforms. And as part of this it is time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do to reflect who we are and what we hope to build. I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now meta. Our mission remains the same still about bringing people together our apps and their brands. They're not changing either and we are still the company that designs technology around people but now we have a new North Star to help bring the metaverse to life and we have a new name that reflects the full breath of what we do and the future that we want to help build from now on, we're going to be metaverse first, not facebook first, that means that over time you won't need to use facebook to use our other services. And as our new brand starts showing up in our product, I hope that people come to know the meta brand and the future that we stand for.

So you don't necessarily think that over time that recently more power has kind of gone from the public sector into the private. Oh, I do think that that's the case, but I think that that is not an equilibrium any of us should aspire to. I think that is in, you know, from the vantage point of being a board member. It's in some instances quite disappointing that, uh, we as board members or corporations are expected to lead on public policy issues like education, health care or even climate change. I mean, we we do rely very heavily on government helping us to think through how to measure and to think about risk mitigation, but also government has a broader mandate, um, to think about issues such as trade offs. I gave you an example something like racial discrimination. We can all agree and look at the numbers and see that actually having more diverse businesses, whether it's in terms of gender, race, um, in thought and in background, all of that is good stuff. Um, but you know, we also don't want to end up in a situation with the narrative becomes so aggressive that we're fighting discrimination with discrimination. Um, that's also not in equilibrium, which pursue and similarity with climate change. You know, there's no doubt about it. There's an urgent and important issue to address here, but we're not going to get it right until we understand that there are 1.5 billion people in the world, but no access to energy in a in a clean, cost effective way. And the risks of those people living in disorderly environment actually can come to haunt us through disorderly migration and other broader economic challenges. But again, one company can solve that by itself. It needs government involvement. It needs to partner, as we've seen, you know, with the vaccines. You know, there's no way those companies could have done that without really good engagement with government. And that's critically important

 SPEAKER 1: You're in a pretty incredibly enviable role. WhatsApp is a super hot property. It's Facebook's fastest growing, and yet it makes very little in the way of revenue. What gives? SPEAKER 2: Yeah, well we're excited about the opportunities we have to build great futures for businesses, some of which will generate revenue. We have some today. One that we're seeing a lot of growth with is an API that we provide to large businesses that want to be on WhatsApp. It turns out that people would much prefer to contact businesses via messaging them than they would through the traditional channels of calling them on a phone, calling a 1800 number and waiting on hold, or going to a website and filling out a form. If you think about it, you'd much rather text a business and get a response back an hour later, than sit on hold for 20 minutes before you talk to someone. And that's great for businesses, because it actually not only the customers prefer it, it's way more efficient. The ROI is much, much higher on your customer support operations or some of your commerce activity and supporting your customers. So we charge for that. We've seen tremendous growth in that. Large businesses are adopting it. If you're running a large business and you want to make your customer support better, it's a great option. We're also increasingly seeing businesses advertise on Facebook and Instagram. But instead of pointing the advertisement to a website, point it to a WhatsApp thread. So say here's what I'm selling. If you'd like to learn more, message me. People prefer that. It's a much easier user experience. Businesses prefer it because the sales close better. And it's great for us because of course if the sales close better, it's a more valuable advertisement for the business. The business might be willing to pay more for it. So we have some areas where we're seeing revenue growth today. But we're also excited about the future opportunity. We've passed now more than 50 million active business accounts on WhatsApp. A lot of these are businesses that are very new. Micro businesses in parts of the world that are rapidly growing economies, potentially new to the internet. And what's really exciting for us is those are all new businesses that we can reach out to. And if we build things for them that are valuable for them, offer them to them, charge for them, upsell them on things like Facebook and Instagram advertising. So there's a lot of really exciting opportunity for us ahead.
