Lithium-ion batteries are key to a zero-emissions future, but mining their raw materials exacts a harsh environmental toll. Li-Cycle extracts metals like cobalt and nickel from end-of-life batteries (regardless of their size or chemistry). Its soon-to-open Rochester, N.Y., recycling plant will be the first major new North American source of battery-grade lithium, producing enough for 225,000 EVs annually.
