What Impact Will 5G Have On Tech And Regulatory Standards?

The shift to 5G involves a riot of different companies, technologies and regulatory standards. Which players will lead?

Smartphones sales in China are down 4 % year over year. Erin, should smartphone makers be worried? Yes. They should be very worried. China has been this easy growth market for them for the past six years. So basically since smartphones were invented, China has been Just you know, guaranteed growth. And this shows that ya know the market is kinda being penetrated, and everybody has bought their smartphone for the first time in China, and so now their gonna have to compete on price. Right. I'm, I'm, I'm not worried. I, I, I look at this market. This is a really robust market. I mean. Even though they were in decline, they shipped 100 million units, in you know, single quarter, that's an enormous amount of phones. That's a lot of phones. But is there gonna be consolidation at the low end of the market, absolutely. You can't just compete on price. Where it's interesting and where's there's gonna be a lot of strength is at the high end of the market. And you're looking at companies like Apple, your looking at companies like [ INAUDIBLE ], Samsung, Lenovo, these are companies that are gonna win Despite the decline. Well, here's the problem with that argument, you know, if people are all upgrading to, you know, the high end smartphones, that means they're, it's a very considered purchase and they're not going to make it every year or six months. They're gonna, ya know, wait til their contract runs out But they're going to do every two years, so that means they're buying less frequently, so even if the margins are better, the overall market is still going to be smaller. I won't deny that the market, ya know, situation is going to change radically for these companies, but look Look, the Chinese market's huge. I mean, even on the global stage it's huge. If you're winning in China, you're winning in the world, and two of the Chinese makers who mostly sell in China, Xiaomi and Huawei, Mm- hm. are global top five because they're winning. So the way I see it? China is just a great purse to start dominating everywhere else. This is true, but going out to the world, they're going to India, you know, they're coming out to the US. And like, guess what, there's a lot of competition there. So what's happening in China, you know, the radical changing of this market, you know, moving to the higher end, is happening in every emerging market. Are smartphone makers in trouble in China?

Lenovo is in hot water after it pre- installed unsafe software on its laptops. Robert, is the road to hell paved with good intentions? Andrew, what Lenovo did is reprehensible. [ LAUGH ] The security community is outraged at them. So, they partnered with this ad- tech firm called Superfish. Uh- huh. And basically what the software does that they have is it takes your secure and trusted connections to websites, rips them open, peaks inside, looks at all the information and leaves you vulnerable for any attacker to steal your data. It is, it's an outrage. That sounds pretty terrible. You, you know the thing that, you can understand how this happens, right? I cannot understand how this happens. No, no, no. Bear with me, I'm not saying it's okay, but Lenovo makes. Laptops, they are low margin products. Big companies like IBM sold those businesses to get out of that, that kind of business. So, Lenovo has to find other corners. Places to find money, software services. That's usually the answer. That's probably why they went this route. Clearly wasn't a good idea. Sure. I mean, there is no excuse for what Lenovo did. It, it makes no sense to me how this got through their vetting process. Plus if you look at the facts, I mean, there is one password protecting this software, it's the same across all machines. No. yes and it is the name of the company who helped supply the technology. Ugh that's pretty terrible. It's bad, it's not good. Look the thing that is really bothering me about this whole situation, beyond the obvious is that Lenovo through this whole period has said that this software was supposed to enhance the customer experience, and I realize it's a little bit of marketing fluff, you know, but they wanted to do it. To enhance the experience. Customers said they didn't like it and that's why Lenovo pulled it out. So if they didn't ask for it, they didn't like, I mean, come on. This is, this is Business 101. It's an absurd notion to me for Lenovo to think that people want to get pop up ads served to them on their computer. I mean, name one person who's been delighted to see a pop up ad. I love pop up, no I really don't. And plus, you know. that coupled with the glaring security issues, its, its just, what a mess. That's a fair point.
