Hilcorp, the largest privately owned oil and natural gas producer in the U.S., encourages its employees to have an entrepreneurial mindset, and all staffers own company shares. Its five-year “Big Hairy Audacious Goals” program rallies its workforce around achieving certain ambitious targets and then rewards employees handsomely for meeting them: Every employee who is with Hilcorp for the duration of the five-year plan receives the prize. Past rewards include a new car and a $100,000 cash bonus. “When Hilcorp wins, we all win,” one worker notes. The company’s 2,850 full-time employees are driven by a culture which emphasizes “world-class engineering, operational expertise, and dedication to doing things ‘the right way.’” One of the notable pillars of the Hilcorp ethos is “open books management”: Employees have access to company financials, which empowers them to make suggestions in the interest of Hilcorp’s overall success.
