Based in Boise, Idaho, Albertsons is the second-largest supermarket chain in North America after Kroger, with more than 2,200 stores and some 270,000 employees. The latter number has grown in recent months as the company has staffed up to meet the COVID-19-related spike in demand, hiring about 55,000 people since March. Albertsons had a strong spring as consumers turned to home cooking in the face of the pandemic; sales were up 34% on an annual basis in March and April. The company went public in June amid a tumultuous market, but so far investors seem satisfied with the grocer's performance, with the stock now hovering close to the IPO price of $16.
