The year started a little rocky for Lundgren, who announced that Macy’s would lay off 2,500 workers in January. But the move saved the company $100 million as it increased its focus to online shopping. Lundgren refers to Macy’s as the 10th largest online company in the world, although it continues to face challenges from Amazon and other online retailers. And, amid expectations of a big holiday season, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based retailer announced it would hire 86,000 seasonal workers, up 3.6% from last year. —Ryan Derousseau
