No other startup has transformed homeowners into micro-entrepreneurs quite like Brian Chesky’s Airbnb. While it prepares for an employee stock sale, the wildly popular online rental site is set to garner a valuation of $13 billion. The 33-year old Chesky, who shares the No. 1 spot with Uber founder Travis Kalanick on Fortune’s 40 under 40 list this year, still has some legal hurdles to overcome. New York City has announced a crackdown on local listings, citing that more than 70% violate local hotel laws. On the bright side, the city of San Francisco has recently passed an initial bill that would regulate and legitimize Airbnb. —J.A.
