Johnny Ferro estimates that he spends 100 hours a year fixing fences, weeding flowerbeds, wrapping holiday presents, and doing other volunteer tasks for the Richmond State Supported Living Center, a home for developmentally disabled adults. Forty of those hours are, in a sense, on his employer’s dime; Granite Properties, a commercial real estate company where he serves as an operating engineer, provides workers with a week’s worth of paid time off each year to volunteer. “The school is my passion,” he says. “I couldn’t do all this without Granite giving me the paid time off to go out there.” Read the Great Place to Work review here.
