A 233-bed rural community hospital with a few satellite offices, Southern Ohio Medical Center puts priority on the education and training of its staff and health care professionals. The hospital, which serves communities in the Portsmouth, Ohio, area that are in the throes of the opioid crisis, provided its employees with more than 80,000 hours of training at a cost of more than $2.3 million in 2018. The nonprofit hospital makes sure employees know their hard work is appreciated by mailing handwritten notes to their homes and including them in decision making. “Decisions are made as a team, not a single leader … Everyone is important, no matter their position. Multiple opportunities to further education for employees, spouses, and children,” one employee wrote.
