New York’s largest private employer and health care provider cares for more than 2 million people in the New York metro area every year. In response to two specific traumas at a Labor and Delivery unit in a Northwell facility involving mothers and children, execs organized Team Lavender, a rapid-response team of social workers, chaplains, nurses, integrative therapists, and others to promote and provide emotional, spiritual, and physical support to employees (72% of whom are women). “We are both the providers and the customers,” says one employee. The idea is to promote self-care in the face of trauma to further support patients, employees, and the community. The practice has been presented at national conferences and was published in the Journal of Nursing Management in February 2019.
