Industry: Finance

As head of investment research at the world’s largest hedge fund, Karen Karniol-Tambour has reached an enviably influential position in the world of finance—and all before turning 35. A graduate of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Karniol-Tambour joined Bridgewater Associates straight out of college in 2006; 13 years later, she’s reportedly one of the few people fully in the know when it comes to the Ray Dalio–led firm’s thinking on its investments. In her time at Bridgewater, Karniol-Tambour has established herself as an expert on global markets. That expertise has helped deliver results for Dalio and his firm over the past decade; Bridgewater’s flagship Pure Alpha fund outperformed most of its competitors by posting gains of 14.6% net of fees in 2018, which was widely considered a difficult year for hedge funds at large. Karniol-Tambour’s future looks exceptionally bright; her mentor, Bridgewater co-CIO Bob Prince, has said he expects her to succeed him one day.
