Pokémon Go, the anticipated augmented reality game, is coming out on Android and iOS devices today after almost a year of anticipation.
In September, Niantic, a former Google startup, in partnership with Nintendo created Pokémon Go for phones, and announced it would be released sometime this year.
However, as of now the game seems to be unavailable for some U.S. users at this time, where as users in Australia and New Zealand have reported the app is available for both Android and iOS. According to The Wall Street Journal, The Pokémon Company is recommending U.S. and Japan users “please wait for a while” for the app’s official launch in those markets.
The game uses your smartphone’s camera and sensors, as well as location-based algorithms, to place Pokémon in the real world. A trailer that was released prior to the game features people using their phones and a new watch-like device called Pokémon Go Plus. According to TechCrunch, the wearable device will be available for $35 and will go on sale later this month.
The wearable device allows users to travel the real world and find the fanciful creature, including iconic Pokémon character, Pikachu. Players can also trade the Pokémon they’ve captured (with Pokéballs, of course) and team up together to fend off legendary creatures, such as Mewtwo, a previous Fortune article reported.
Mobile games, such as Pokémon Go, adds to the power shift in how consumers game. In 2015, for example, mobile games predicted to overtake console games, according to a Fortune article. Newzoo, a video game research firm, expected that mobile games would generate $30.3 billion worldwide that year, where console games were predicted to take in $26.4 billion. The firm expected sales for the total worldwide gaming market to be $91.95 billion in 2015.
