Sony’s Playstation phone to be called the ‘Xperia Play’

A trademark filing reveals what would be the likely name of the upcoming PSP Phone from Sony.

We’re likely to find out much more about Sony’s Playstation phone next month at CES or at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the following month in February. Today, however, PocketNow found what is likely to be the trademark name for the device in the EU.

The name “Xperia Play” suggests that the phones will stick with the Sony (SNE) Ericsson branding rather than becoming a full Sony-only product.

A prototype video of the device is embedded below. Sony recently announced a PSP app for Apple’s (AAPL) iOS and Google (GOOG) Android, though it appears the app, in its current form, won’t actually play games.

According to the Unofficial Xperia X10 blog, one of Sony Ericsson’s PR firms, Jung Relations, has registered the XperiaPlay.com, .net, and .org URLs.

Pocket-lint reports that this handset will see an April release and PocketNow has also heard it will have an extremely high resolution for a smartphone, perhaps as high as 720P. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVXp5_eKk8M&w=610&h=420]
