In 2014, according to this much discussed report issued Friday by Gartner, Inc., Nokia’s (NOK) Symbian will still be the world’s No. 1 smartphone operating system with Google’s (GOOG) Android nipping at its heels. In the pack, several lengths back, will be Apple (AAPL), Research in Motion (RIMM) and Other. Microsoft (MSFT) brings up the rear.

What do you say we file this one away and mark our calendars for Sept. 2014? If we can remember four years from now to compare Gartner’s chart with how things actually turned out, it might tell us a lot about the value of predictions like this.
