In January 2012, Lionsgate Entertainment purchased Summit Entertainment, bringing together two of the biggest film franchises in movie history – Lionsgate’s Hunger Games and Summit’s Twilight Series. The net effect of this blockbuster acquisition was to boost Lionsgate’s revenues by more than a billion dollars. Last year, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took in $865 million at the worldwide box office, putting it on track to be the tenth highest-grossing release of all time. But that’s not all. Lionsgate also makes great television shows, including Mad Men, Nurse Jackie and Orange is the New Black, which added $447.4 million to revenues last year. —N.S.
