This year, Americans are expected to spend about $20 billion on Valentine’s Day. But does it really take that much money to find love? Fortune took to the streets of Brooklyn to find out.

While some people seemed willing to spend billions of (hypothetical) money, others found the idea of paying for love, well, cheap. “She’s not my soul mate if I have to buy her,” said one man we talked to.

Ultimately, we were pleased to find that New Yorkers, cynical as people say they are, are hopeless romantics just like the rest of us.

Happy Valentine’s Day from Fortune!
