Best Buy Is Celebrating Its 50th Birthday With 50 Hours of Discounts by Madeline Farber @FortuneMagazine August 18, 2016, 10:24 AM EDT E-mail Tweet Facebook Linkedin Share icons Best Buy is turning 50, and is celebrating with a marathon sales event that will make you think Christmas came early this year. Starting at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, Best Buy bby will have 50 hours of Black Friday-like deals on everything from Apple MacBook Pro computers, 4K UHD TVs, to headphones and activity trackers. The sale will be offered in stores and online and the electronics chain said that online shoppers will receive free two-day shipping on most everything included in the sale. The sale comes just in time for back-to-school shoppers, the company said, giving students the chance to stock up on all their electronic needs. Amazon, one of Best Buy’s competitors, had its second-ever Prime Day last month, a one-day sale exclusively for members of its Prime subscription shopping service. Last year, Amazon amzn said that on Prime Day sales rose 80% in the U.S., surpassing its Black Friday sales from the previous year. But this year’s Prime Day saw a rocky start, as customers reported technical problems when checking out. Despite the issues, Amazon reported its second annual Prime Day was its largest sales day ever, surpassing Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and last year’s Prime Day, individually. Best Buy did not release how much it expects to see in sales from its birthday bash, so it’s to be determined if retailer will see similar success from this first-of-its-kind sale. Best Buy opened its first store on Aug. 22, 1966 St. Paul, Minn.
