Battling severe industry pressures, Southern spent most of last year restructuring the Alberta-based utility, energy, and logistics business her father and grandfather founded in 1947. As profit nose-dived in 2015—hit by oil prices stuck below $50 a barrel and mounting regulatory hurdles, Southern, who took charge in 2003, has turned to renewable energy ventures. She is expanding the $3.2 billion-in-revenue power and pipeline operator’s footprint across the US, Australia, and South America. One new project: a co-generation power plant for cleaner and more affordable fuel in Mexico. Last September Southern joined German Chancellor Angela Merkel as part of Germany’s G7 Presidency dialogue on women’s economic empowerment.
