The iconic telecom company is undergoing a massive update of its technology—and is retraining its workers to match. That means that rather than making big layoffs and hiring new, tech-savvy workers, AT&T is pushing to retrain more than 100,000 of its staff to work with the modern equipment and thrive in today’s tech-centric business world. (See our feature in the March 15 issue of Fortune magazine for more.) Employees appreciate the “sheer size and scale” of the effort, as well as the company’s ongoing push toward innovation, and say they’re happy with the ample opportunities to grow: “you can start your career in HR, and retire in Finance.” Last year, AT&T filled more than 40% of its open positions with internal candidates.
