These accomplished women didn't make the MPW ranking—this year. Meet a group of executives who are at the center of some of the most exciting developments, mergers and turnarounds in technology.
Vice President, Original Series Netflix Last year, the longtime Netflix executive was put in charge of the company’s aggressive push into original content. For Holland, that includes developing properties like this year’s prison comedy-drama “Orange is the New Black” and last fall’s Emmy award-winning “House of Cards.” The political drama, starring Kevin Spacey, is partly responsible for the company’s spike in new members during first quarter 2013: three million new members, bringing total global subscribers then to over 36 million.
Julie Larson Green
Executive Vice President, Devices & Studios Group Microsoft A self-taught programmer and 20-year Microsoft veteran, Green began with the company as a program manager and worked her way up to running the Windows group — a task that included reinvigorating the operating system with the release of Windows 7. Under her watch, the division closed the fiscal year with a 5% increase in revenues. An executive reorganization earlier this year put Green in charge of Devices & Studios Group, which includes the company’s bestselling Xbox franchise.
Director of Business Operations Instagram White’s title is director of business operations, but her job description is a lot like that of chief operating officer. Her job: transforming the photo-sharing network, acquired by Facebook for nearly $1 billion last year, into a moneymaker. That includes building Instagram’s advertising efforts, which kicked off this October with the roll-out of video and image ads to some of the company’s 150 million monthly active users.
Vice President, Media Twitter Sladden was hired by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams after she successfully integrated Tweets into Current TV’s coverage of the 2008 presidential elections. At Twitter, Sladden’s responsibilities include creating and maintaining relationships with the information network’s most influential users, from actors to civic leaders. Her role will likely increase post-IPO: Twitter is reportedly exploring ways to better integrate multimedia into the user experience, potentially as another revenue stream.
President, America, Sales Google As President, Americas at Google, Georgiadis leads the company’s North American and Latin American ad sales and operations teams, a geographic area that accounted for over 45% of the company’s $28.1 billion in revenues during the first six months of 2013. Previously at Google, Georgiadis’s responsibilities included expanding local commerce efforts like Checkout and Google Places
General partner Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Few tech pundits command as much attention as Meeker, who Fortune commended in 2006 for her sharp ability to spot big picture trends “before they come into focus.” When she presents her annual Internet Trends report, it is a veritable industry event. This year proved no different, as Meeker unleashed a wealth of data, from worldwide video and photo sharing to China’s surge in tech adoption and e-commerce sales.
Chief Technology Officer Cisco Cisco’s Chief Technology and Strategy Officer oversees the computer networking giant’s investment and acquisition strategy. And Warrior has certainly kept busy, leading at least 15 acquisitions over the last 12 months, including Ubiquisys, a UK-based provider of technologies that improve mobile data connectivity. Cisco CEO John Chambers called her one of the sharpest minds in technology. Those are more than just kind words: Chambers also announced earlier this year Warrior is a frontrunner to succeed him when he retires.
Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Communications Apple Cotton acts not just as Tim Cook’s gatekeeper for anything media-related, but also for her contributions to product launches, and reportedly, the upkeep of Apple’s premium, luxury brand image. The latter will prove particularly important as competition from Samsung and others continue.
