VirtualWorks Group Inc., a Boca Raton, Fla.-based content virtualization startup, has raised $8.5 million in Series A funding led by New World Angels. Skyway Capital Partners served as placement agent. www.virtualworks.com

 

OnSwipe, a New York-based platform for tablet publishing and advertising, has raised $5 million in Series A funding led by existing shareholder Spark Capital. Other backers include Lightbank, Lerer Ventures, SVAngel, Betaworks, Thrive Capital, ENIAC Ventures and Yuri Milner. The company raised a $1 million seed round in January. www.onswipe.com

 

Airway Therapeutics LLC, a Cincinnati-based developer of a surfactant protein to improve lung function in premature infants, has raised $500,000 in initial seed funding from CincyTech and Cincinnati Children’s Tomorrow Fund. Nimbic, a Mountain View, Calif.-based provider of cloud-computing EDA solutions, has raised $6.9 million in VC funding. Austral Capital led the round, and was joined by return backers Madrona Venture Group and WRF Capital. www.nimbic.com

Mindflash, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based provider of an online platform that helps companies share knowledge and train employees, has raised $4 million in new VC funding led by return backer The Investment Group of Santa Barbara. www.mindflash.com

PunchTab Inc., a platform for websites or blogs that want to build loyalty programs, has raised $850,000 in seed funding from Mohr Davidow Ventures, Embarcadero Ventures, and angels Venky Harinarayan, Anand Rajaraman and Nick Sturiale. www.punchtab.com

The Melt, a grilled-cheese restaurant concept that utilizes smartphones and automation for its order management, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Sequoia Capital. The news was disclosed by Melt founder Jonathan Kaplan (creator of the Flip cameras) at the all Things D conference.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1

Alliance Health Networks, a Salt Lake City-based developer of medical condition-specific social networks, has raised $11 million in new VC funding. New World Ventures led the round, and was joined by Physic Ventures and return backers Highway 12 Ventures and Epic Ventures. www.alliancehealth.com

EndoSphere Inc., a Columbus, Ohio-based developer of endoscopically-implantable devices for the treatment of metabolic diseases, has raised an undisclosed amount of Series A funding led by Broadline Capital. www.endosphere.com

6Wunderkinder, a German developer of cloud-based productivity applications, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from T-Venture. It previously raised €500,000 from High-Tech Gründerfonds. www.t-venture.de

Intrexon Corp., a Blacksburg, Va.-based synthetic biology company, has raised $100 million in Series E funding. New investors were not identified. Return backers include Third Security LLC and company chairman and CEO Randal Kirk. Perella Weinberg Partners served as placement agent. www.dna.com

Enerkem, Montreal-based provider of synthetic gas and other alternative fuels, has raised C$59 million in new VC funding. Valero Energy Corp. led the round, and was joined by return backers Waste Management, Rho Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures and Cycle Capital. www.enerkem.com

Mavenir Systems, a Richardson, Texas-based provider of mobile infrastructure solutions for LTE operators, has raised $40 million in Series E funding. August Capital led the round, and was joined by Cross Creek Capital and return backers North Bridge Venture Partners, Austin Ventures, Alloy Ventures and Greenspring Associates. Excelimmune Inc., a Woburn, Mass.-based developer of recombinant polyclonal antibodies, has held a first closing on a $10.5 million Series B round. No investor information was disclosed.

Act-On Software, a Beaverton, Ore.-based provider of cloud-based integrated marketing platforms, has raised $10 million in Series C funding from Trinity Ventures. Prior company backers include U.S. Venture Partners, Voyager Capital and Cisco Systems. www.actonsoftware.com

Shield Therapeutics, a London-based developer and commercializer of late-stage hospital pharmaceuticals, has raised €8.2 million in Series A funding from Inventages Venture Capital. www.shieldtherapeutics.com

Fixmo Inc., a Toronto-based provider of infrastructure management solutions for mobile devices, has raised US$6.5 million in Series B funding. Panorama Capital led the round, and was joined by return backers Rho Ventures Canada, iNovia Capital and Extreme Venture Partners. www.fixmo.com

Advance Medical, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based company focused on commercializing medical technologies in Latin America, has raised $6 million in Series A funding. Venrock was joined on the deal by undisclosed Brazilian institutions and individual angels.

Novophage, a Boston-based developer of industrial biologics, has raised $5.7 million in Series A funding. Flybridge Capital Partners led the round, and was joined by Founder Collective, Boston University, Chevron Technology Ventures and The Kraft Group. www.novophage.com

Pixonic, a Moscow-based social games publisher, has raised $5 million in second-round VC funding from Ventech, Kite Ventures and TA Ventures. www.pixonic.com

55tuan.com, a Chinese group purchasing website, has raised $200 million in Series A funding. Backers include CDH Ventures, Goldman Sachs, Sky Blessing Investment and Zero2IPO Ventures.www.55tuan.com

Wooga, a German developer of social games, has raised $24 million in Series B funding, according to TechCrunch. Highland Capital Partners led the round, and was joined by Tenaya Capital and return backers Balderton Capital and HV Holtzbrinck Ventures. www.wooga.com

OpenX, a Pasadena, Calif.-based provider of online advertising technology, has raised $20 million in fourth-round funding. AOL Ventures, SAP Ventures, Mitsui & CO. and Presidio Ventures were joined by return backers Accel Partners, DAG Ventures and Index Ventures. The company previously raised $31 million. www.openx.com

Primus Power, a Hayward, Calif.-based developer of grid-scale energy storage solutions, has raised $11 million in new VC funding.
