The chief takeaway is that Mayer acknowledges Google’s attempt to buy Groupon and states that Google will use its existing properties to build internally what it wanted to buy for $6 billion. Of course it could make some smaller purchases to help the cause. On buying companies, Mayer said, “I think that we have both a good structure for companies that get integrated into Google… and we also have a new construct called an autonomous unit where we basically will buy a company and leave it very independent.” Apparently that wasn’t good enough for Groupon.
