Austerity: in name only.

Second acts (or second axe?): Lord Browne, BP’s former chairman, is now the efficiency czar for the U.K.

America: 234th birthday is Sunday. Getting soft in our old age? Discuss.

The White House: A little squirrelly on the subject of a double-dip recession?

Credit: Still tightening.

Welfare cash: A frequent visitor to California strip clubs.

Infighting: BP and Anadarko are clawing each others’ eyes out about the Macondo spill.

Countrywide: They should maybe set up an office in the court system. Another lawsuit, this time on alleged discrimination.

The Great Corn Shock: The commodity is doing (suspiciously?) well.
